NICEVILLE — On April 16, Raider Arena at Northwest Florida State College hosted the 50th Anne T. Mitchell Senior Honor Award Ceremony, which honors local students who excelled in their academic studies during their high school careers.

The ceremony featured 591 high school seniors from Baker, Chcotaw, Crestview, Fort Walton Beach, Laurel Hill and Niceville High Schools who will graduate later next month with honors. During their studies, each student achieved a weighted GPA of 3.75 or higher, giving students the distinction of Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude or Cum Laude.

In a statement in a news release provided by the Okaloosa County School District, Superintendent Marcus Chambers congratulated students and their support system, including parents, teachers, staff, principals and community members who have supported them along their academic journey.

"They have worked hard and achieved outstanding academic success while also participating in extracurricular activities such as arts programs, sports, and clubs," said Chambers.

Chambers then congratulated Amanda Dye from Niceville High School, who was awarded the Peggy Gorday Bruner Award, given to the county's most outstanding academic scholar.

Dye was nominated by Niceville High Principal Charlie Marello and was voted to receive the award by the Okaloosa County School Board based on Dye's SAT, ACT, and/or CLT scores, GPA, awards and leadership roles, community service and principal's endorsement that included their cumulative weighted GPA.
