    Newton Softball Team Bests Morristown-Beard

    NEWTON, NJ—The Newton High School softball team won 9-5 over Morristown-Beard when they played them away on Thursday, May 16.

    The Braves came out strong, matching the two runs Morristown-Beard put on the board in the first inning. They then took the lead 6-5 at the end of the third, and finally took the victory by adding three more runs in the fourth.

    Jaida Long went 3-for-3 at bat with two doubles, a single and three RBIs. Catherine Vena went 3-for-3 at bat with a single, two home runs, five RBIs and two runs scored.

    Jaclyn Vena went 1-for-3 at bat with a single, scoring one of Newton’s runs.Jordyn Young, who scored three of Newton’s runs went 1-for-2 at bat with a single.

    Melissa Fehr went 0-for-3, but scored two runs for Newton. Madison Jones went 0-for-1 at bat and scored a run.

    Fehr and Long were on the mound for Newton. Long started and pitched 3.2 innings, allowing five runs off three hits and struck out nine. Fehr, who pitched the last 3.1 innings, struck out four batters.

    The Newton High School softball team ended the 2024 season with an overall record of 9-13 and an NJAC-Colonial division record of 6-4.
