LAURENS COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – The Laurens County Sheriff’s Office is mourning one of its own as a deputy recently lost his battle with cancer.

According to the sheriff’s office, Deputy Christopher Motes has died following a months-long battle against cancer.

“Deputy Motes was a dedicated member of our Law Enforcement family, serving our community well and often expressing his desire to one day return to work even in the midst of his health issues,” wrote the sheriff’s office in a Facebook post.

In January, the sheriff’s office announced Motes was diagnosed with cancer following a seizure. An MRI after showed a tumor on his brain.

The sheriff’s office said he was diagnosed with kidney cancer, which has metastasized to his lungs and brain.

A fundraiser was set up to help Motes’ wife, Tabitha, who also works for the sheriff’s office, and their children. That fundraiser brought in thousands of dollars to support the family in recent months. You can read the full statement from the sheriff’s office below:

It is with heavy hearts that we share the sad news of the passing of Deputy Christopher Motes after a courageous battle with cancer. Deputy Motes was a dedicated member of our Law Enforcement family, serving our community well and often expressing his desire to one day return to work even in the midst of his health issues.

We extend our deepest condolences to Deputy Motes’ wife Tabitha, who is also an employee here at LCSO. His family, children, friends, and loved ones are in our thoughts during this incredibly difficult time. Please keep them in your prayers.

We would like to thank the many individuals, agencies, and businesses across South Carolina and beyond who donated to assist the Motes family in previous months. Your generosity made their burden a little easier to carry and allowed them to focus on what was most important to them.

“Deputy Motes remained strong and courageous throughout his battle with this terrible cancer. He kept a positive attitude and had such a willingness to fight, not to mention his desire to get back here and serve this county. We mourn his loss and we will continue to be there for his family.” -Sheriff Don Reynolds

Deputy Motes, your kindness and service will forever be remembered.

“I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7
