Lowndes County scholars tagged for academic excellence

Lowndes County scholars were recently recognized for their academic excellence by the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association.

Meadows Rosser, William Carlton and Margaret Holladay were awarded the Tagged for Academic Excellence Scholarship at the Alabama Cattlemen’s Foundation Scholarship Banquet held Friday, May 3 in Wetumpka.

Rosser is the son of Sanford and Beth Rosser of Lowndesboro. He attends Auburn University where he is pursuing a degree in industrial and systems engineering.

Carlton is the son of Gray and Missy Carlton of Fort Deposit. He attends Auburn University where he is pursuing a degree in civil and environmental engineering.

Margaret Holladay is the daughter of Richard and Whitney Holladay of Hayneville and attends Auburn University where she is pursuing a degree in agricultural communications.

Laura Ann Casey and Sara Oglesby were awarded the Tagged for Greatness Scholarship. Casey is the daughter of Dustin and Stacy Casey of Hope Hull. She will graduate from Lowndes Academy and attend The University of South Alabama to pursue a degree in nursing.

Oglesby is the daughter of Michael and Stephanie Oglesby of Lowndesboro. She will graduate from Lowndes Academy and attend University of South Alabama to pursue a degree in early childhood development.

Faith Lane was awarded the Tagged for Industry Involvement Scholarship at the banquet. She is the daughter of Brad and April Lane of Lowndesboro and attends Auburn University where she is pursuing a degree in agriculture business and economics.

Margaret’s sister Hope was awarded the Cecil Lane Family Scholarship at the banquet. She will graduate from Morgan Academy in May and attend Auburn University to pursue a degree in biosystems engineering.

Trevor Haney of Hope Hull received the Butch and Lisa Smathers Scholarship. He is the son of Alan and Karen Haney of Hope Hull.

A graduate of Lowndes Academy, Haney attends Mississippi State University where he is pursuing a degree in Bachelor of Science in agricultural education, leadership and communication.

The students were among 113 scholarship recipients awarded over $110,250 in scholarships by the Alabama Cattlemen’s Foundation (ACF). The ACF serves to engage in educational and scientific activities to improve the beef cattle industry in Alabama and educate youth on the importance of beef cattle in Alabama. It provides the opportunity to make tax deductible donations for the educational work of the foundation and is largely funded by the sale of the “Cowboy Tag” vanity license plate.

Throughout the year, the ACF supports numerous organizations and events which help to educate and train future generations of the livestock industry. The ACF has awarded scholarship money each year to Alabama youth with more than $1.2 million being awarded to date.
