    Volusia-Flagler High School Athlete of the Week poll: May 13

    The polls are open!

    It's time to vote for the Volusia-Flagler Athlete of the Week for the week of May 6-11. Athletes for all in-season sports are eligible.

    Last week, New Smyrna Beach baseball player Tate Haag took home the honors, claiming 84% of the votes.

    The News-Journal gathers nominees from scores and stats emailed to the sports desk during the week by coaches across the area. Coaches can email nominees to cvinel@gannett.com.

    Voting will close at 10 a.m. Thursday. Votes are restricted to once per device per hour.

    Baseball

    Peyson Garcia, Spruce Creek: Garcia came in and worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam without allowing a run in the seventh inning of the Region 1-7A quarterfinals against Bartram Trail. He also threw a scoreless eighth inning, had a hit, drove in a run and scored a run during a 7-6 victory.

    Kevin Maya, Flagler Palm Coast: The senior tossed six innings of one-run ball during the Bulldogs' 1-0 loss to Timber Creek during the Region 1-7A quarterfinals. He struck out five batters.

    Tommy Soltysiak, Pine Ridge: The junior was the lone Panther with two hits and drove in their only run during a 6-1 loss to Wesley Chapel in the Region 2-5A quarterfinals.

    Softball

    Mia Fisher, University: The junior went 1-for-2, knocking in a run and adding a walk during a 13-3 loss to Lake Brantley in the Region 1-7A quarterfinals.

    Alexis Minaberry, Spruce Creek: The sophomore had hits in all three of her at-bats and scored three times during a 7-1 victory over Mandarin in the Region 1-7A quarterfinals. Two of her hits were solo homers.

    Track and field

    MaKenna Estes, New Smyrna Beach: The senior was the top pole vaulter at the Region 2-3A meet, grabbing first with a mark of 11 feet, 9.75 inches.

    Sierra Howard, Matanzas: The senior claimed a Region 1-3A championship in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:18.24.

    Chandler Mitzo, Seabreeze: The senior captured the Region 2-3A title with a javelin toss of 168 feet, 2.5 inches.
