Now a chilling new study shows homeless people face 3.5 times the likelihood of dying than housed people. In a shocking twist from conventional wisdom, the study showed white homeless people had a 40% higher likelihood of dying than Black homeless people. This is significant because numerous studies have shown Black people are more likely to become homeless than white people, and also are at a disadvantage among housed populations.

The Denver City Council will consider spending $24 million for security services at the city’s homeless hotels and micro-communities. The Finance and Governance Committee will review the contracts on Tuesday. Initially Securitas Security Services U.S. received an $18 million to provide security at the sites. But as the city’s security needs became more acute, Securitas could not keep up, according to a memo from city staff to the council. Advanced Professional Security initially received a contract of $400,000, but the city has added $3 million to it. Aquila Services Corp., doing business as Metro Protective Services, also first received a $400,000 contract. That contract has also been extended to $3.4 million.

The Aurora City Council forged ahead Monday on a new “tough love” approach to homelessness that sentences urban campers to addiction and mental health treatment. The council decided at its study session to advance to a regular meeting an ordinance creating a new court for homeless campers. Ordinance sponsor Steve Sundberg said the court is not meant to be punitive. Offenders who successfully complete a year’s probation and their treatment plan would have the violation removed from their record, he said.
