Google I/O 2024: How to watch and what to expect
By Joe Wituschek,

Google I/O is one of the biggest technology events of the year, constantly competing with Apple’s WWDC annual developer conference. Both events usually occur within a month of each other, and this year is no exception.
I/O 2024 kicks off on Tuesday, May 14th this year. There’s a ton of expected announcements around software and artificial intelligence, so it’s going to be a busy event. Here’s how to tune in and what to expect from this year’s conference.
The Google I/O keynote will kick off on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, at 1:00 PM ET / 10:00 AM PT. After the main keynote, there will be a ton of other smaller keynotes and developer sessions occurring throughout the rest of the week.
As the company has done with tons of its other events, Google will be streaming its I/O annual developer conference event on YouTube. Google owns YouTube, so there’s no surprise there. Since the event is on YouTube, the company has created a placeholder video that you can even set a reminder for.
Once the event goes live, you’ll get a push or email reminder (or both) so you don’t forget to tune in. Of course, the video will remain on YouTube as well after the event is over if you happen to miss it.
You can watch the Google I/O 2024 keynote on YouTube below:
One thing to expect from Google I/O, as with every year, is a lot of talk about the company’s operating systems and software features. I/O is the company’s annual developer conference (much like Apple’s WWDC), so the main focus of the event revolves around software vs. hardware.
This year, Google even dropped the Pixel 8a right before the event. The company has typically announced its “a” series Pixel phone during the event, so Google seems to have so much to talk about with software (AI, AI, and AI) that it doesn’t even have time for even one new Pixel phone this year.
So, what kinds of announcements can we expect from software in 2024? Of course, the company will be talking about the next generation of Android: Android 15. While the first Android 15 betas are already out with developers, Google is saving the bulk of the software announcements for the event. Those could include satellite messaging, more widgets for tablets, and even support for third-party voice assistants.
AI is also expected to be a huge focus for the event — which is not surprising since Google is getting a lot of competition from Microsoft and OpenAI now, with the latter even teasing its own search engine . Gemini is Google’s answer to ChatGPT and the company is expected to talk about it a lot at the event. Announcements could include a new assistant as well as more integrations into the company’s other apps and services like Google Maps , Google Workspace, Gmail, and more.
It’s going to be a big event, so we’ll be covering everything when it kicks off on May 14th. See you there!
