SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — Farmers in Somerset County are saying that agriculture is both a science and an art and that they need skilled workers.

On Friday, May 10, 8th grade students got to participate in Somerset AG Days and were introduced to various career paths in the agriculture industry. From veterinary science, nutrition, quality control, engineering, and IT to sales, marketing, accounting, logistics and law, students of all interests can find agriculture-related job opportunities all across Pennsylvania.

As technology advances farmers are also looking to make sure that the next generation is prepared. They added that as farms of all sizes are starting to use AI, piloted drones, and other innovative tech solutions to improve their processes and increase their output. There are even Fitbit-like wearables for cows, which help farmers identify potential health problems in their herd.

The committee chairman said they showcased a variety of jobs and opportunities in the industry. Some require just a high school diploma, while others require trade school or a 4-year college degree.

“By 8th grade, they’ve got to make some career decisions, what their path is going to be, and this is an opportunity to look at some things they can do right here in Somerset County and stay at home,” Harold Shaulis, Chairman for the AG Day Committee said. “We want them to have opportunities here locally, and there’s an abundance of jobs in Somerset County. They have decent wages, good benefits something the kids can enjoy.”

Shaulis added that it’s also important for students to find the niche in farming that they enjoy the most.
