A geomagnetic storm means that the stargazers in Oregon will have a rare chance to catch the North Lights late Friday night and early Saturday.

According to the National Weather Prediction Center, the aurora may become visible over a large portion of the country, as far south as northern California.

There's no guarantee Oregonians will see the aurora, but it may become visible between 10 p.m., Friday, April 10 and 2 a.m., Saturday. For best viewing, it's advised to get away from populated city centers, where light pollution will block the night sky.

According to KOIN 6 meteorologist Kelley Bayern, a news partner with Pamplin Media Group, there are a few popular sites for stargazing that can serve as prime places to spot the aurora:

Crown Point Vista House, 40700 Historic Columbia River Hwy, Corbett Jonsrud Viewpoint, 15652 Bluff Rd, Sandy Lookout Ridge Park, 2900 W 5th St, Washougal, WA Portland Women’s Forum Viewpoint, 39210 Historic Columbia River Hwy, Corbett Council Crest Park, 1120 SW Council Crest Dr, Portland Panorama Point County Park, Eastside Rd, Hood River

But no matter where you go, Bayern said, the key is to find a place that's got good views of the sky, and is dark.

“The best way to see the aurora will be away from areas with light pollution,” Bayern said. "You’ll want to get away from the city and out to darker fields, parks, and hilltops. Look towards the north and from the horizon to overhead. You might just get lucky."
