CABELL COUNTY, WV (WOWK) — A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Thursday for Cabell County’s newest EMS station, and officials say it will be a game-changing addition to their emergency services.

The Nancy Cartmill Memorial Station, named after the former Cabell County Commission President, will house three ambulances. It’s expected to greatly reduce emergency response times for residents in downtown Huntington, according to Cabell County Commission President Kelli Sobonya.

Progress continues on new Davis Creek Elementary

“Anytime we can have bricks and mortar that provide services to our citizens, I think it’s a positive thing. We’re gonna be able to increase our capacity of offering our emergency medical service to our community,” said Sobonya

The station will be built on 8th Avenue, right across the street from an older Cabell County EMS station. Sobonya also said that the new facility will be taking the place of a run-down building that became an eyesore.

“This is a great day because there used to be a dilapidated structure here and it invited vagrancy. Now we’re going to have a state-of-the-art ambulance station,” said Sobonya.

This $4.3 million project will be constructed by Neighborgall Construction. Funding for the building will come from Cabell County’s Ambulance Fund, and will not add any extra charges to Cabell County taxpayers.

Construction on the Nancy Cartmill Memorial Station will begin by the end of the month, to be completed by late May or early June 2025.
