Nearly 60 Georgia counties including Cherokee are under a tornado watch until 1 p.m. Thursday, the National Weather Service reports.

A tornado watch means the conditions for a tornado to form are present in a system, not that one has been detected or sighted. A warning indicates that a tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar.

Thunderstorms were coming through the area eastward across north Georgia Thursday morning; the forecast for Cherokee shows the chance of another thunderstorm before 11 a.m., then a chance of showers of thunderstorms, mainly between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., per the NWS. The chance of precipitation for Thursday is 90%, with new rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.
