Former Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina was left 'aghast' when he first arrived at the club, he has revealed in an interview. Yet he went on to make 394 appearances and become a cult hero at Anfield .

Arriving in the aftermath of Liverpool's incredible 2005 Champions League triumph, Reina quickly made the starting spot his own. A stalwart of the Rafael Benítez reign, he would later play under Roy Hodgson, Kenny Dalglish and indeed Brendan Rodgers.

Remarkably, he is yet to hang up his gloves, although he admitted to The Athletic in November that this 'may be' his final season. His career since leaving Liverpool has taken him to Napoli, Bayern Munich, AC Milan, Aston Villa, Lazio and most recently Villarreal.

Back in his native Spain, Reina recently spoke to La Liga World. He reflected on joining Liverpool all those years ago, and initially being shocked by the weather as he wondered what he had done.

“I moved on to what has been perhaps the most important sporting spell of my career, at the club where I competed best, where I felt best on a personal and collective level, in terms of competitiveness. I spent eight wonderful years in Liverpool ," Reina explained.

“[But] I spent two weeks looking at my wife and saying, "What is this?” We came from somewhere where the average temperature was 25 degrees but there, in July, it rained non-stop for two weeks.

"I was aghast. I didn't expect it and it was difficult to adapt to all that. It was difficult because I was still a kid; I was 23 years old. In the end, though, though it can be difficult to adapt, you adapt to everything when you are doing well, when you are happy, when you are comfortable and when you are valued.”

Liverpool.com says: Like a number of past Anfield icons, Reina has somewhat sullied his reputation, causing a stir by telling Vinícius Júnior to be 'more mature' ( Mirror ) in the midst of last year's racism saga. The goalkeeper did condemn any racist abuse, but certainly seemed to hit the wrong note with his remarks.

On the playing side of things, though, he will certainly always be remembered fondly. The manner in which he ousted Champions League winner Jerzy Dudek was pretty ruthless; a year on from Istanbul, it was Reina starting the FA Cup final.

A stalwart for a long time after that, it's lucky he was able to get used to the weather! It's frankly incredible that he's still playing — the 41-year-old has revealed ambitions to become a coach when he finally does call it a day, in a move that would see him follow in the footsteps of Xabi Alonso , Albert Riera and other former teammates.
