Title contenders all over the South Shore: High school girls lacrosse rankings

By Chris McDaniel, The Patriot Ledger,

There's a ton of depth on the South Shore for high school girls lacrosse.

In Tuesday's MIAA power rankings , seven area schools were ranked in the top 10 of their respective divisions. So when the tournament starts in a few weeks, there will be plenty of area state-title contenders.

There aren't a ton of changes from our first list, but two teams popped their way off the bubble and into the top 10.

WHERE WE LEFT OFF: Can NDA be challenged? South Shore top 10 high school girls lacrosse rankings

Record as of Thursday morning and previous ranking in parenthesis.

On the bubble: Marshfield, Whitman-Hanson, Canton, Oliver Ames, Hull

    10. South Shore Tech (13-0, bubble)

The Vikings had a solid season last spring, but they've reached a whole new level in 2024. Peyton Mathisen recently became the program's first 100-goal scorer. Circle the May 16 game against Upper Cape Tech. The Rams are 10-3 this spring, and the Vikings prevailed, 9-8, in the teams' first meeting on May 4.

    9. Braintree (8-4, 7)

The Wamps have already matched their win total from a season ago. At No. 12 in the Div. 1 power rankings, Braintree is flying under the radar, but this is a team that can make noise in the postseason.

    8. Scituate (7-5, bubble)

Every season, the Sailors seem to start slow (albeit against tough competition) before rounding into form. Scituate seems to be hitting its stride with a five-game winning streak that came to an end against Duxbury on Wednesday.

    7. Hanover (9-3, 8)

The Hawks are currently No. 2 in the Div. 3 power rankings. Hanover is in the middle of a brutal three-game stretch that started with losses against Cohasset and Hingham and concludes against Duxbury on Tuesday. The Hawks close the season out against Scituate and Sandwich. Those two matchups will reveal a lot about Hanover's hopes in the tournament.

    6. Norwell (8-5, 4)

The Clippers have struggled at times this season, but their record is not an accurate representation of how good this team is. Norwell has three one-goal losses and has only lost to teams with state-title aspirations. A May 3 win over Foxboro might be a turning point for Norwell. The Clippers always seem to peak at the perfect time.

    5. Weymouth (9-5, 5)

Playing a tough schedule has led to a little more inconsistency for the Wildcats this spring, but it will make them battle-tested for the state tournament. Thursday's game against Walpole (No. 2 in Div. 2) was another chance to match up with one of the state's best teams.

    4. Duxbury (10-3, 6)

The Dragons picked up a solid win over Scituate, 15-7, on Tuesday. Duxbury also has notable victories over Norwell, Westwood and Marshfield. The Dragons end the season with a busy stretch of five games in 10 days.

    3. Cohasset (8-3, 3)

The Skippers have lost three of their last five games, but all three of those teams are in the top 5 in the state tournament power rankings in higher divisions (Notre Dame Academy, Hingham and Medfield). Cohasset will be one of the favorites in Div. 4, but before the playoffs there are big South Shore League games looming against fellow Div. 4 contenders in Sandwich (May 13) and Norwell (May 20).

    2. Hingham (12-2, 2)

The Harborwomen have beaten just about everybody on this list (Scituate, Norwell, Duxbury, Cohasset, Hanover and Marshfield) except for No. 1 NDA. Hingham is a legit contender in Div. 2. The Harborwomen have won 10 in a row since starting 1-2.

    1. Notre Dame Academy (14-1, 1)

The Cougars did drop a game (against out-of-state foe Sacred Heart-Greenwich) since our first batch of rankings. NDA, which is currently No. 1 in Div. 2, picked up its best win of the year, beating Central Catholic (No. 1 in Div. 1), 11-8, on Sunday. Div. 2 is filled with more contenders than last year, but NDA hasn't lost to an in-state foe since May 23, 2022.
