ZETUS — Volunteer Fire Departments and Mississippi Forestry Commission reined in a grass fire back under control Wednesday afternoon. The fire was on Posey Drive off of Zetus Road.

Lincoln County Volunteer Firefighters from Zetus, Loyd Star and New Sight were on scene to keep the fire contained and protect structures until the Mississippi Forestry Commission could get there. MFC uses bulldozers to create bare dirt firebreaks in order to keep fires under control and have done so on Posey Drive.

Smoke was thick in the area and could continue as the fire burns under control. According to Fire Information for Resource Management System, the fire is about 80 acres in size and was first detected by the system at 11:35 a.m.

Sustained wind speeds reached 16 mph while gusts reached 26 mph around noon when the call came in. Wind speeds are forecast to be around 15 mph with gusts reaching 30 mph. Lincoln County is not under a burn ban at this time. MFC generally advises it is best to avoid burning on windy days. Always stay weather aware and check conditions before burning.

    Trailer fire

Zetus Volunteer Department Chief Dale Anding said the department fought a separate fire Tuesday afternoon. Call reports show the call came in at 4:05 p.m. Tuesday on Denton Trail. Hog Chain assisted in responding to the fire.

Anding said the trailer was not destroyed. He said the fire started in a bedroom, burned the bed and damaged a wall.
