Baseball: County tournament upsets impact latest North Jersey Top 25 rankings

The biggest county-tournament upset of the weekend precipitated the biggest move in the North Jersey baseball Top 25.

Wayne Valley, the No. 7 seed in Passaic County, upset No. 2 seed Wayne Hills in Saturday’s quarterfinals. This happened after the Patriots had swept the regular-season series, including a 4-3 win started by Wayne Valley freshman Nick Erminio.

Round 3 went to the Indians, 4-3, with Erminio earning the victory thanks to six innings of five-hit ball with two earned runs allowed. Not only is coach Jeff Hoover’s team into the Passaic County semifinals for the fourth time in the last five tournaments, it also debuts in this week’s rankings at No. 21.

The two schools to pull off opening-round upsets in the Bergen County tournament, Dwight-Englewood and Midland Park, each move up a spot. And a five-game win streak earns Park Ridge consideration for the first time since the preseason poll.
