    VOTE: The News-Press Athlete of the Week presented by Babcock Ranch for April 29-May 4

    Each week, The News-Press staff will select one finalist in each high school sport. Nominees are derived from scores and stats emailed by Lee County’s coaches during the week to sports@news-press.com . Readers can then vote in the online poll to determine who the Athlete of the Week will be.

    The poll is posted at news-press.com each Monday, and voting will end at 10 a.m. Thursday each week.

    Last week, SFCA track athlete David Johnson won with 61% of the vote.

    The winner will be announced on the @newspresssports Instagram page and on Twitter at @nphssports . The winning athlete will receive a shirt courtesy of BSN Sports.

    Here are the nominees for April 29-May 4:

    Baseball

    Jason Bello, Bishop Verot

    Bello had two hits, including a double, and drove in three runs to lead the Vikings to a 8-0 win against Oasis in the district title game on Thursday. He also pitched well in relief, giving up just one hit and striking out four in the last three innings.

    Case Bowman, Estero

    Bowman drove in four runs on three hits, including a three-run homerun to help defeat Cypress Lake 10-0 in the district semifinals on Tuesday. He posted 8 RBIs in the district tournament for the Wildcats.

    Aiden Matyas, SFCA

    Matyas hit two home runs, including a grand slam, in the King's district championship game against Canterbury on Thursday, helping the team win 14-9.

    Austin Schoolcraft, Island Coast

    With two outs in the bottom of the 7th, Schoolcraft got the game-tying hit to force extra innings against Fort Myers. In the ninth, he came through again, plating the walkoff run with a bunt for a 8-7 district title win on Thursday.

    Softball

    Marissa Burchard, LaBelle

    Burchard hit two home runs, drove in three runs, and scored three times to pace the Cowgirls to the district title, defeating Bonita Springs 11-1 on Thursday.

    Jordyn Korpi, Riverdale

    The freshmen southpaw flummoxed the Charlotte lineup, striking out 7 batters, walking none and allowing just three hits and two runs, helping the Raiders win the district title with a 7-3 win on Thursday.

    Gianni Torres, Bishop Verot

    With the score tied 3-3, Torres hit a bases-loaded, two-run single to open the floodgates against Aubrey Rogers. The Vikings went on to win the district 14-4 in five innings on Thursday. Torres went 3-for-4 with a double and 3 RBIs.

    Kaliyah Williams, North Fort Myers

    Williams drove in three runs in the Red Knights' 8-1 win against Ida Baker for the district title on Thursday. In the circle, she went 7 innings, striking up 9 batters and giving up three hits and one run.

    Zoe Yzaguirre, ECS

    Yzaguirre pitched a 5-inning no-no in the Sentinels' 13-0 district championship win against SFCA on Thursday. She allowed one walk and struck out 13 batters.
