    Vote now for the Martin Dentistry Athlete of the Week (April 29- May 5)

    The 2023-24 school year is slowly but surely wrapping up meaning only a few more Martin Dentistry Athlete of the Weeks to go.

    Almost every spring sport in San Joaquin County is done with its regular season and gearing up for the Sac-Joaquin Section and CIF State playoffs. As teams across the 209 prepare for postseason play they have pulled out clutch wins to better their teams' chances of making a playoff bracket.

    The poll includes athletes from the following spring sports: softball, baseball, boys’ volleyball, swimming and diving, and track and field. The poll can be found at the bottom of the story and closes on Friday.

    Here are the candidates for April 29- May 5 (athletes listed in alphabetical order):

    Aerie Garcia, softball, Stagg: Garcia and the Delta Queens meant business when they took over crosstown rivals on May 1. The junior pitcher ended the game with 11 Ks and was just as effective offensively with two hits and a run. With Garcia leading the charge, Stagg beat Bear Creek 4-1 putting them in second place in the San Joaquin Athletic Association.

    Brooklyn Goeckeritz, swimming and diving, Ripon: The Indians took on the SJS Division III swimming championship and also shined in the diving category. Goeckeritz has been one of the stars of this year’s squad as their best diver. She advanced to the CIF Swimming and Diving Championship which is set to start on May 9.

    Dustin Hoekstra, baseball, Ripon Christian: Hoekstra did it all to help the Knights secure the Southern Athletic League championship. In their May 3 matchup against Denair, he led his team on both sides of the ball striking out 12 batters and batting a .750. He ended the night with four runs, three hits and two RBIs as Ripon Christian would win the game 11-1.

    Daniel Huerta, boys’ volleyball, St. Mary’s: The Rams made history on May 3 notching its first SJS playoff win in school history. Huerta led them past Edison in the first round of the Division 1 bracket finishing the game with a team-high 21 kills. The senior opposite-side hitter had the game-winning kill in the fourth set helping his team win the match 3-1 and advance to the quarterfinals.

    Ashlyn Jubrey, softball, Lodi: Lodi has captured the Tri-City Athletic League championship going on a four-game winning streak to close out the regular season. Jubrey has played a crucial role for the Flames as their clutch pitcher. She racked up nine Ks in only five innings against West on April 25 helping her team to an 11-0 dub.

    Joshua Young, track and field, Tokay: Tokay’s do-it-all track star this season has been Young who competes in just about every event. He has competed in the 400-meter, 1,600-meter, pole vault and is also a cross-country runner in the winter. At the SJS Division 1 invitational meet he set a school record in pole vault with a 14’6” score breaking the school record set in 2012.

    Athlete of the Week nominations are based on information available to The Record about all high school varsity players from San Joaquin County. Nominations must be received for consideration by Monday morning following that week's games.
