A person died early Saturday after being struck by a passenger train in Leucadia.

An Amtrak Pacific Surfliner heading northbound at approximately 60 mph hit the victim near N. Coast Highway 101 and Jupiter Street around 7 a.m., according to OnScene.TV. The train stopped about a mile to the north after the incident.

San Diego County Sheriff’s deputies and the San Diego County Medical Examiner were on the scene to conduct the investigation. Initially, it was unknown whether the victim was male or female.

The tracks were shut down to all train traffic for more than two hours after the accident. Authorities were seeking witnesses to the incident.

A social media account that reports on Pacific Surfliner activity noted that from 7:45 to 9:50 a.m. Saturday all rail traffic was temporarily suspended between Oceanside and Solana Beach.
