COLUMN: Prizeweek comes to an end

    By Scott Lawson,

Happy May the Fourth Be With You to all who celebrate.

Some housekeeping heads up that doesn’t involve a galaxy far, far away. The good folks who bring to us the Prizeweek Puzzle are ending it. And nobody is going to restart it.

So the last chance you’ll have to play Prizeweek is May 11.

Trust me when I say I know it’s a very popular puzzle and we certainly want to stay active with our readers who have enjoyed it. There have been meetings of our minds on what to do to keep you engaged and entertained.

A few other things are going on as well.

Starting Sunday, there will be a fresh E-edition online. While our app and website are in constant motion with the latest news, this will be another opportunity to check out a few more stories in the E-edition format.

And the first one has an intriguing story completed by University of Florida journalism students who did a deep dive into high flights. They interviewed air traffic controllers and pilots who have dealt with life-and-death situations in the sky. It is a great read.

On Wednesday, FIERCE returns with a focus on May being the month of Mother’s Day. We will have a full page of FIERCE stories and women in the area who have been nominated by others to become a focus for their challenges and accomplishments.

And, perhaps it’s an early reminder, but Mother’s Day is coming up — and if you have a mom or someone who you love who is in that realm, it’s time to start looking at how to put them in your own spotlight.

And yes, your mother is No. 1. We all agree with that. But there’s other women whom you know who need your appreciation. Maybe it’s your wife, or an aunt who wasn’t even — technically, a mother — or a woman who adopted out a child.

And maybe you know someone you should guilt into giving their mom a call.

About a dozen years ago, I was griping about needing to visit my mother. At the time, I was talking to a sports editor about the situation.

He was under the impression that my mother lived states away. She didn’t. She was about a half-hour away — but you know the “Cat’s In The Cradle” song, we all get busy. Sometimes, a half-hour seems a lot farther than it is.

After I complained for less than a half-hour, my friend learned she lived half-a-county away.

“Lawson,” he said succinctly. “Go visit your mom.”

So I did. She appreciated it. I appreciated the reminder from a buddy.

So, if you can, go visit your mom. Maybe watch “Star Wars: A New Hope” with her. She’ll love it. Well, maybe.
