The Mille Lacs Raiders varsity baseball team had four games scheduled this past week, of which they managed to complete three, with the final one against Hill City cancelled because of rainy weather.

Raiders head coach Tyler Soderstrom summed up the weeks performance thusly: “Our bats were hot all week - 37 runs in three games while facing East Central’s best pitcher and Braham’s two best pitchers. In the Braham games we just gave up too many free bases with walks, hit batters, and errors and they took advantage of that with some good hitting of their own. What we need to do now is combine the pitching and fielding we got the first three games of the season with the hitting we’ve had in the last three games, and then we could be pretty dangerous!”

    East Central

The Mille Lacs Raiders baseball squad hosted the East Central Eagles in a conference game on April 23, and came away with a 17-4 rout in a game called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Josiah Mueller went the first two innings on the mound, giving up four runs on two hit, walking five and striking out one. Justus Spengler came on to pitch the final three innings, facing just 13 batters and getting 12 outs, giving up just one hit, no walks and striking out three.

The Raiders pounded out 13 hits, led by Creedon Spengler who went 3-4 with two RBI, followed by Sam Hebeisen with two hits and four RBI. Thomas Schleis, Eric Pederson, Brodie Kuhlman and Justus Spengler each had two hits.

    Braham

In game one of a double-header with the Braham Bombers on April 25, the visiting Mille Lacs Raiders out-hit their host 10-7, but lost by one run in the bottom of the final inning, 10-9.

Thomas Schleis pitched the first six innings, giving up nine runs of which just four were earned, while striking out five. Sam Hebeisen pitched the final inning, giving up the winning run after walking three Bomber batters.

Schleis led his team in hitting, going 2-3 with two RBI, followed by Brodie Kuhlman who was 2-3 with two RBI and Josiah Mueller had one hit and two RBI.

Braham pitching struck out nine Mille Lacs hitters.

    Braham

The second game of the double-header against the Braham Bombers was equally as close as game one, but the results were the same — a win for the Bombers, 14-11.

The teams traded three-run first innings and were tied 11-11 after seven leading to extra innings where Braham scored three runs in the top of the eigth which was enough for the victory.

In both double-header losses, the Raiders out-hit the Bombers, but errors and too many base-on-balls issued by Raider pitchers along with 12 strikeouts by Mille Lacs batters in the eight innings of the second game were enough to do the visitors in.

Mille Lacs pitching also did not have much luck dealing with Braham’s best offensive player, Jacob Tepley who went 4-7 with five RBI and one home run during the two games.

Mille Lacs’ first and second hitters in the line-up, Thomas Schleis and Eric Pederson, led the Raiders in offense going 4-9, with Pederson having four RBI in game two.
