The high school skiers who were named 2024 Daily News All-Stars

After combing over statistics and results, and with the guidance of local athletic directors and coaches, we at the Daily News selected All-Stars for boys and girls basketball , boys and girls hockey , boys and girls swimming , boys and girls track and field , gymnastics , skiing and boys and girls wrestling .

Although the sports and skill sets may vary, there’s no denying that this group put up otherworldly numbers this winter while helping their respective teams find success – whether that be on the court, field, ice, mat or track, in the gym or pool, on the slopes or trails.

The Daily News presents its 2023-24 All-Stars for Nordic and alpine skiing:

Oliver Atwood, Dover-Sherborn

The sophomore returns to the Daily News All-Star team after taking 11 ^th in the giant slalom and 13 ^th in the slalom at the MIAA Alpine Championships as the Raiders were the state’s top public-school finisher, placing third behind winner St. John’s Prep and runner-up St. John’s (Shrewsbury). Atwood also plays golf and lacrosse for the Raiders.

Nick Boden, Lincoln-Sudbury

The senior captain finished in the top 10 in every Mass Bay West race, including a high of fourth place. The two-time team MVP finished in sixth place in the league and earned a third league all-star nod on his way to a seventh-place finish at the MBW All-League race and a 30 ^th -place finish in the slalom at the MIAA Alpine Championships, his third appearance at the state race. "Nick has been one of the most consistent skiers in our league over the past four years, contributing to a league title as a sophomore and leading a competitive lineup the last two years,” said coach Matt Wentworth. “Replacing him next season is going to be a tall order."

Anneka Doughty, Lincoln-Sudbury

A freshman, this Nordic skier took seventh in the Mass Bay West League, took 30 ^th at the MIAA Nordic Championships and competed in the U16 Mass. State High School Competition. “As a ninth-grader, her accomplishments far exceed her years,” said L-S coach Rami Alwan. “Not only is she a strong skier, she is also a great coach/mentor to less experienced skiers.”

J.B. Flynn, Hopkinton

This senior captain finished eighth in the Central Massachusetts Conference Ski League and led the Hillers to a second-place league finish. The team MVP earned a spot in the MIAA Alpine Championships, where he placed 29 ^th in the giant slalom and 106 ^th in the slalom.

Mackenzie Gabel, Lincoln-Sudbury

This junior and returning Daily News All-Star earned four top-six finishes in Mass Bay West, including a high of fourth place, to finish tied for sixth overall and earn a MBW all-star nod along with Sophie Ward and Virginia Weeks. Gabel took second in the all-league race and then placed 36 ^th in the slalom at the MIAA Alpine Championships as the Warriors placed third behind winner Masconomet and runner-up Mohawk Trail. For her career, Gabel has 12 top-10 league finishes and is a three-time states qualifier. “She is a fierce competitor and a standout teammate," said L-S coach Matt Wentworth.

Stephen Goehringer, Wellesley

The senior Nordic standout was a Mass Bay Ski League East all-star, placing 10 ^th at the league meet, before going on to a 19 ^th -place finish at the MIAA Nordic State Championships at Prospect Mountain as the Raiders took third overall. Goehringer was also a two-time Daily News All-Star as a cross-country runner and is an outdoor track standout who will run at California Institute of Technology (Caltech).

Jack Kim, Dover-Sherborn

The junior was integral to the Raiders’ third-place finish at the MIAA Alpine Championships, placing 14 ^th in the slalom and 32 ^nd in the giant slalom.

Finley Knapp, Wayland

A two-time returning Daily News All-Star, Knapp placed 20 ^th in the giant slalom and 21 ^st in the slalom at the MIAA Alpine Championships. A three-time DCL All-Star, Knapp also plays lacrosse and field hockey for the Warriors. Knapp is a member of her school’s a capella group and student government.

Mina Lien, Wellesley

The junior Nordic standout was a Mass Bay Ski League East all-star after taking seventh place in the league meet before going on to finish 28 ^th at the MIAA Nordic State Championships as the Raiders finished sixth at Prospect Mountain. Lien also runs track for the Raiders.

Fiona Lloyd, Wellesley

The senior Nordic skier was key to the Raiders’ success, earning Mass Bay Ski League East all-star honors and taking sixth in the league before placing 32nd at the MIAA State Championships as the Raiders placed sixth as a team at Prospect Mountain. Lloyd also runs track for the Raiders.

Ema Claire Luczkow, Dover-Sherborn

The sophomore three-sport (cross-country, Alpine skiing, lacrosse) standout and younger sister of former three-sport star and Daily News All-Star Eloisa Luczkow is shining in her own right, with her performance this winter no exception. Luczkow took 22 ^nd in the slalom and 51 ^st in the giant slalom at the MIAA Alpine Championships.

Amy McCormack, Wayland

This senior co-captain and four-year varsity Nordic standout took fifth in MassBay West and ninth at the MIAA State Championships as the Warriors took 12 ^th as a team. McCormack also runs cross-country, plays Ultimate Frisbee and is in Wayland’s robotics and environmental clubs.

Tyler Merritt, Wellesley

The senior Nordic standout was a Mass Bay Ski League East all-star, placing 9 ^th at the league meet, before going on to a 15 ^th -place finish at the MIAA Nordic State Championships at Prospect Mountain as the Raiders took third overall. He also competed for Team MA at the Eastern High School Championships at Holderness (NH) School.

Daniel Narvaez, Wayland

The senior was a Mass Bay Ski League West all-star after placing third in the league and then took 45th at MIAA Nordic States. Narvaez also competed for Team MA at EHSC 2024 at Holderness (NH) School.

Willie O’Neill, Dover-Sherborn

The senior was key to a talented D-S bunch, placing 15 ^th in the slalom and 20 ^th in the giant slalom at the MIAA Alpine Championships as the Raiders placed third overall. O’Neill is also a lacrosse standout for the Raiders.

Andrew Parnell, Framingham

This sophomore earned two first-place finishes, nine top-10 finishes and was sixth in the Mass Bay Ski League East standings at the end of the winter. The two-time team MVP, Parnell was the first Flyer to ever qualify for the MIAA Alpine State Championships, where he placed 69 ^th in the giant slalom. “He made his mark in the league as an individual racer and he put Framingham on the map for the first time,” said coach Roni Sue Bower.

Lucy Reiner, Lincoln-Sudbury

This freshman Nordic skier tied for ninth in the Mass Bay West League, took 23 ^rd at the MIAA Nordic Championships and competed in the U16 Mass. State High School Competition. “As a ninth-grader, her accomplishments far exceed her years,” said L-S coach Rami Alwan. “She is a fierce competitor who has improved in every race this season.”

Naomi Rice, Wayland

This junior Nordic skier was a Mass Bay Ski League West all-star, placing ninth in the league, and followed that up with 20 ^th at the MIAA Nordic States at Prospect Mountain before competed for Team MA at EHSC 2024 at Holderness (NH) School.

Luca Scirica, Wellesley

This senior Nordic standout was a Mass Bay Ski League East All-Star, placing seventh in the league, before a scorching 12 ^th place at the MIAA Nordic States at Prospect Mountain. He then competed for Team MA at Eastern High School Championships 2024 at Holderness (NH) School.

Alexandria Taylor, Lincoln-Sudbury

This Warrior sophomore separated herself from the pack in 2024, winning both the MassBay West and state championships. Taylor then went on to take 10th at the junior nationals classic sprint qualifier. She also took first among youth women at the US Biathlon trials and competed in the Youth Olympic Games in Korea and the IBC Youth World Championships in Estonia. “Alex is the complete package - she is smart, strong, and an incredible skier,” said L-S coach Rami Alwan.

Rowan Verghese, Natick

The Redhawks junior Nordic sskier finished fifth in the Mass Bay East League before then taking 14 ^th at MIAA States at Prospect Mountain. Verghese then competed at Easterns at Holderness (NH) School. “Rowan is a lighthearted leader both on the snow and off,” said Natick coach Rami Alwan.

Sophie Ward, Lincoln-Sudbury

A returning Daily News All-Star, this senior captain left the high school slopes with a flourish, posting five top-five finishes that included her first career win and tying for third overall in the Mass Bay West league. The team MVP for the third year in a row (a co-winner in this case), Ward finished 13th at MIAA Alpine States in slalom and 26th in giant slalom. "Sophie has been the heart and soul of our team that has finished third in the state for the past two seasons,” said L-S coach Matt Wentworth. “She will graduate from L-S as one of the most decorated skiers in our team's history and will be sorely missed next season."

Virginia Weeks, Lincoln-Sudbury

The freshman alpine star finished in the top four in every Mass Bay West race, including five top-three finishes, as she finished tied for third in MBW and earned team co-MVP honors with Sophie Ward before finishing 39 ^th in the state in the giant slalom at the MIAA Alpine States at Wachusett Mountain. "It isn't every year that you have a freshman come in and dominate the way that Virginia did this season,” said L-S coach Matt Wentworth. “It's a great feeling to know that she'll be here anchoring our lineup for another three years."

Arielle Wember, Wellesley

The senior closed her stellar Nordic career strong, taking fourth in the final Mass Bay East league race and overall standings to help the Raiders sweep the league races. Wember then placed 21 ^st at the MIAA Nordic State Championship at Prospect Mountain to help the girls place sixth overall.

Nathan White, Westborough

White proved himself to be one of the premier skiers in Central Mass., finishing 28 ^th in the slalom at the MIAA Alpine Championships at Wachusett Mountain.

Tyler Zilinski, Medfield

The junior skiing dynamo and returning Daily News All-Star for the Ashland co-op won the state championship in the giant slalom and took fourth in the slalom at the MIAA Alpine Championships. He was also second in the Central Mass Conference and selected to represent Massachusetts in the Eastern High School Championships. Zilinski also plays lacrosse for Medfield.
