Jerod Mayo on Drake Maye possibly starting Week 1: 'He still has to win that job'

For those wondering whether there would be a true competition for the New England Patriots’ starting quarterback job this fall, head coach Jerod Mayo told you what you needed to hear. And it doesn’t sound like Drake Maye’s high draft selection will gift him anything other than a chance to compete for the gig.

Appearing on “The Rich Eisen Show” Thursday , Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo continued with a message he’s been delivering all offseason long, that rookies need time to mature, that this is a draft-and-develop team, and that most importantly there will be a true competition for the starting QB position with veteran Jacoby Brissett.

“Ultimately he (Maye) still has to win that job,” Mayo said. “We’re not just gonna give it away. And I don’t think Jacoby, the type of player, the type of competitor that he is, is just gonna give it up either.”

Mayo added that his plan is to get Maye in the building, get him going with offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt as soon as possible, get him familiar with where everything and who everyone is, and then let the process of developing their future QB begin.

As for the competition and Maye’s development…earlier in the week we learned via NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe that offensive assistant Ben McAdoo will have “a huge role for Drake Maye” and will be heavily involved in Maye’s grooming and development.

Add to that Brissett, speaking to ESPN’s Mike Reiss , saying that “competition brings out the best in all of us” in regards to Brissett being the potential veteran mentor for Maye, and it sounds like a real competitive process is underway.

Who ultimately wins the QB1 job, and who remains on the roster with the Patriots having five QBs (Brissett, Maye, recently drafted Joe Milton and veterans Bailey Zappe and Nathan Rourke) are just two of the most compelling storylines to keep an eye on as the Pats make their way to the 2024 season. Maye the best man win!
