A Tarrant County official says a community effort by people in the Silver Creek area west of Lake Worth has paid off. County Commissioner Manny Ramirez said a company that had been planning to build a new landfill in that area has withdrawn its application to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

Neighbors began to organize against the plan by BAP Kennor Landfill, Inc. last year. The company originally said it had a permit for the project dating back to the 1970s.

Ramirez argued that the population of the area had grown since then, and it was no longer a suitable site for a landfill. Neighbors voiced their concerns to the TCEQ. They were concerned about additional traffic in the area and the site's proximity to a natural spring.

"We are happy with today's announcement that this TCEQ permit process has been withdrawn," Ramirez said. "I am grateful to those who came together in November to share your concerns about this landfill and to those who worked for months to provide feedback and information."
