HINESVILLE, Ga. (WSAV) – Four candidates are challenging incumbent Liberty County Sheriff Will Bowman. Some are calling it a contentious race.

For the primary, Bowman — who is the county’s first African American sheriff — is being challenged by three members of his own party.

Democrats Kevin Hofkin, Keith Jenkins, and Gary Richardson are all looking to unseat him.

The winner will face Republican Gary Eason in November.

One resident says she already has her candidate picked. Manuela Wheel listed some of the qualities she is looking for.

“I definitely want somebody honest. I prefer a Christian. I know a lot of people are going to roll their eyes or whatever on it, but that’s what I prefer,” Wheel said. “I also would like somebody that doesn’t spend too much money.”

Election Day is Tuesday, May 21.

WSAV did reach out to all the candidates for an interview; none were available or we did not hear back.
