Devin McCourty turned down offer to join Jerod Mayo’s coaching staff

In his first year on the job, New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo seems to be surrounding himself with familiar faces of Foxboro on his coaching staff. He’s hired Dont’a Hightower as linebackers coach, and also brought aboard recently retired Matthew Slater as an advisor or reported “right hand man”. If things went Mayo’s way, there would have been another Super Bowl champion in the coaching fold as well.

Appearing on “Up & Adams” on FanDuel TV with host Kay Adams, Devin McCourty said Mayo did in fact reach out to him about coming aboard as a coach on Mayo’s staff, though which position D-Mac would have been coaching or in what capacity isn’t clear. McCourty, who retired after the 2022 season, joined NBC Sports right after leaving the Pats as an NFL analyst and had a terrific debut season, contributing to their flagship Sunday Night Football broadcast. He’s a broadcast star on the rise as he joined the ranks of Rodney Harrison, Tedy Bruschi and our own Christin Fauria as former Patriots with successful media careers.

McCourty may coach one day but the grind doesn’t suit him right now, saying, “Those hours aren’t meant for my life right now.” He also spoke with Adams about which former Patriots he would invite to the Kentucky Derby, first choosing Cam Newton because, “Cam would make sure my hat game is on point.” And as far as Tom Brady’s impending roast Sunday night on Netflix, McCourty’s bold prediction? “Bill Belichick shows up with game film and destroys Tom.”

Though he was turned down by a former teammate, it’s nice to see Mayo trying to get the band back together, calling for the Super Bowl Avengers to assemble, to share their experience and help lead the next generation of Patriots, show them something they may not know much about: how winning at the pro level is done.
