    State supreme court vacancy count for April 2024

    In this month’s state supreme court vacancy update, Ballotpedia tracked announced retirements, nominations, appointments, confirmations, and swearings-in of justices from April 1 to April 30, 2024. Ballotpedia tracks court vacancies in all 52 state supreme courts.

    Announced retirements:

    No new retirements were announced in April 2024.

    Candidates nominated/appointed:

    The Minnesota Commission on Judicial Selection announced six finalists for the two upcoming justice vacancies on the Minnesota Supreme Court on April 1, 2024. Governor Tim Walz (D) selected two appointees from the list, Sarah E. Hennesy and Theodora Gaïtas, to succeed outgoing justices Barry Anderson and Margaret Chutich, respectively. Anderson is set to retire on May 10, 2024, and Chutich on July 31, 2024. The incoming justices will be sworn in the day following their predecessors’ retirement.

    Nominees confirmed:

    No new nominees were confirmed in April 2024.

    Justices sworn in:

    During the month of April, one appointee was sworn in as a state supreme court justice. Gabrielle Wolohojian was sworn into the Massachusetts Judicial Supreme Court on April 22, 2024. She is the second justice appointed by Governor Maura Healey (D) to the seven-member court. Currently, five justices were appointed by former Gov. Charlie Baker (R), while two were appointed by Healey.

    Other news:

    Ann Walsh Bradley announced on April 11, 2024, that she would retire from the Wisconsin Supreme Court in July 2025. Her predecessor will be elected during the Wisconsin Supreme Court elections in 2025.
