4.1 magnitude quake hits Southern California

A moderate earthquake struck Orange County Wednesday afternoon, with shaking felt in multiple areas around Southern California.

The temblor had a preliminary magnitude of 4.1, though it was initially reported at 4.3, according to the United States Geological Survey .

The quake struck at 1:49 p.m. at a depth of nearly a mile and was centered in the Santa Ana Mountains about 5.6 miles southwest of Corona near the border of Riverside and Orange counties.

According to the USGS, shaking was reported in a large swath of Southern California ranging as far as Chula Vista to the south, Indio to the east, Ridgecrest to the north and Simi Valley to the west.

Despite that wide range, the quake appears to have not done any real damage.

“We have received no reports of damage or injuries, and our firefighters are surveying their coverage areas,” the Orange County Fire Authority said on X, formerly Twitter .

The city of Corona issued a statement explaining that it also did not sustain any damage.

While this quake was mild, the OCFA pointed out that the next one might not be.

“This is a good time to remember the tip, ‘Drop, cover, and hold on,'” the agency tweeted.
