State Road 31 closed due to fatal traffic crash

PUNTA GORDA — State Road 31 in Charlotte County is currently closed due to what authorities are describing as a "major traffic crash."

Authorities later confirmed that at least one person died in the crash reported on Wednesday.

The north-south route links DeSoto County and eastern Fort Myers through rural eastern Charlotte County.

The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office issued an alert Wednesday afternoon to warn motorists that State Road 31 would be closed in both directions near the Lee-Charlotte County line.

"Traffic is being rerouted through Babcock Ranch," the alert read. "Expect prolonged delays and avoid the area if possible.

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
