TEXOMA ( KFDX/KJTL ) — Texoma learned first-hand just how quickly and unexpectedly a severe thunderstorm can turn into a life-threatening event on Tuesday, April 30, 2024 .
Ahead of anticipated severe weather, the KFDX Storm Team traveled to Foard County to begin documenting storms as they developed and moved into Texoma. Moving into Wilbarger County, The team continued following a large, isolated storm as it developed.
The National Weather Service, the Storm Prediction Center, and the KFDX Weather Team all saw the weather situation as one that was highly unlikely to produce any tornadic activity.
At around 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, the storm had developed into a supercell as it moved across the Red River into Tillman County. By about 7:45 p.m., the supercell was near Frederick, Oklahoma, and was producing funnel clouds.
Eventually, the storm would produce multiple areas of rotation, spawning the issuance of multiple Tornado Warnings throughout the night on Tuesday.
Eventually, the storm began to threaten far northern parts of Wichita County, near the Red River and Burkburnett. The team, who was still chasing the storm at around 11:30 p.m., was caught in the storm, with zero visibility at times due to high winds and heavy rains.
Video from across Texoma can be found in the video player above.
The footage serves as a reminder that an isolated thunderstorm can turn severe in a matter of moments. Although the tornadic threat was relatively low on Tuesday, the severe storm still developed and produced life-threatening tornados.
