BOONE — On the morning of April 23, a Avery County Schools activity bus with students onboard was involved in a minor crash on the way to a field trip to Greensboro. No one on the bus was injured, and the group was able to continue to its destination following a delay.

According Trooper D. Wyatt with the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the incident occurred on Highway 105 near Vulcan on what is often referred to as "rock crusher hill," when a pick-up truck hauling a small cargo trailer blew a tire, leading to contact with the activity bus.

Trooper Wyatt added that there is the possibility that the driver of the truck may face a possible unsafe tires charge, but that any charge is pending.

"We are very blessed that it was a minor incident with no injuries," stated Avery County Schools Superintendent Dr. Dan Brigman.

Brigman also stated that Thomas Bus Company will be coming to Avery County this week to assess the damage to the bus involved and determine an estimate on damages.
