💮It's a May Day Hump Day!

May 1st is May Day, one of the four ancient Celtic cross-quarter days. It's considered an astronomical holiday as it falls between the March equinox and June solstice. It was once known as “Belthane,” which was a spring celebration commemorated this time of year that included dancing, singing and special bonfires. House doors and animals would be decorated with yellow May flowers and ribbons. (Read more at nationaltoday.com/may-day .)

In Romania, it's known as the beginning of summer, aka arminden , also as ziua pelinului (" mugwort day") or ziua bețivilor ("drunkards' day.")

Because we like to talk food on Wednesday, let's delve into what they eat: Feasting staples include roasted lamb, new mutton cheese and red wine.

With its roots tracing back to the original Coney Island Drive-Inn in Brooksville, the Lee family opened the beloved joint in locations throughout Florida.

The eatery renowned for its iconic footlong hot dogs and rich history dating back to 1960 has opened its newest location in Eustis.

Prime 3 was out of prime rib — go figure, but I enjoyed a much-needed burger with deliciously steamed and marinated broccolini. (See, you can eat healthy with your not-so-healthy carbs and cholesterol.) It didn't disappoint. Later, I couldn't resist trying father-son wonder-grillers Nick & Benny's London Broil , a big hit at the event.

I couldn't eat a whole sandwich and brought most of it home. The meat was pink and tender, the way I like it. Sadly, the bread got soggy, so I toasted a ciabatta bun, grabbed some dill pickles from the fridge, Sir Kensington's Special Sauce , some arugula and made my own newfangled sandwich. It was quite good.

At the fest on Saturday, I went to heaven and back, sinking into the pillow biscuit treat at Breakfast at Tiffany's known as the sausage gravy bomb.

Popular purveyors of contemporary comfort food at local festivals and markets, Tiffany and James Hobgood opened their highly anticipated brick-and-mortar location in downtown this past month. We look forward to featuring the newly minted, minty-green establishment soon in the Daily Commercial.
