CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — The sudden loss of Katherine Anderson has left her family shattered after a crash took her life while she was out for a run on Lucks Lane in Chesterfield County last week.

31-year-old Anderson , a resident of Chesterfield, was running near the intersection of Lucks Lane and Spirea Road on Friday, April 26, when tragedy struck.

At around 8:19 a.m. on Friday, April 26, the driver of a 2019 Volkswagen Sedan was heading west on Lucks Lane when they struck the driver of a 2012 Toyota sedan who was making a left turn onto Spirea Lane.

“I found out when three police officers showed up to my house and told me my wife had died on Lucks Landing earlier that day,” Spencer Anderson, her husband, said.

The collision caused one of the vehicles to veer onto the sidewalk, where it struck and killed Anderson. The family said she died from blunt force trauma to the neck.

8News spoke with Anderson’s family, who said she lived near where she was killed with her husband and two young children. She had been training for a marathon in honor of her brother, Josh, who tragically died in a plane crash a few years ago.

“We’re left to pick up the pieces, and it’s going to be a really, really long journey,” said Anne Marie Mead, Anderson’s sister. “But, I think we’re prepared to because we have to, for those children.”

The family said they have been struggling to cope with this loss, especially how to break it to Anderson’s young children.

“In some ways, it’s made it easier to explain that mommy’s not coming home, because she’s with Uncle Josh,” Jon Drablos, Anderson’s twin brother, said.

The family has started a GoFundMe to help support Anderson’s husband and children during this difficult time.

The family is also calling for improved infrastructure in the area, as this isn’t the first deadly crash on Lucks Lane. In November, a bicyclist was hit and killed on the same road by a driver who was later charged with reckless driving.

The Chesterfield County Police Department has opened an investigation to determine the responsible party in the crash. Anyone with information is asked to call Chesterfield Police at 804-748-1251.
