VERNON COUNTY, Mo. (KOAM) - A former Vernon County inmate is now charged in the January death of another inmate.

According to court documents, Samer Abdel-Ghani is facing one court of 2nd-degree murder and five counts of "Deliver Controlled Substance Except 35 Grams Or Less Of Marijuana Or Synthetic Cannabis."

In January, Chief Deputy Travis Cole told KOAM that death appeared to be caused by an overdose. He says two other inmates appeared to overdosed but recovered.

According to the probable cause, Abdel-Ghani was arrested by the Kansas City, Mo. Police Department and transported to the Vernon County Jail. He was being held on Kansas City charges.

Court documents show Abdel-Ghani was charged on January 9th with possession of drug paraphernalia.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol investigated the death.

According to a Vernon County Jail employee, Abdel-Ghani is not currently an inmate.
