FBI, attorney general issue cyber crime warning in Connecticut

HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — The FBI and Attorney General’s Office issued a warning regarding cyber crimes targeting Connecticut residents.

Special Agent in Charge Robert Fuller said there is a concerning trend of increasing scams resulting in financial losses, often sent overseas, making recovery difficult.

Attorney General Tong stressed that legitimate government agencies do not demand immediate payment.

“Don’t respond to calls, texts, or emails. Don’t give money or personal information over the phone. Avoid wiring money or using payment apps like Venmo or Zelle. And most importantly, don’t send gift cards,” said Fuller.

According to estimates, Connecticut residents suffered a staggering $1.2 billion in losses to cyber crimes in 2023.
