Staying clean at the campsite is important when it comes to hygiene, and doing so in the right way is crucial in terms of sustainability.
Here are nine tips that will help you stay clean at the campsite in a sustainable way:
1. Pack the right clothes
Pack at least two outfits to alternate days – this allows clothes to air out and can prevent mold and bacteria. You can "do laundry" when your clothes get too dirty to wear by using extra water, or water from a nearby natural source to rinse out your clothes. You can even use biodegradable soap or detergent, then simply hang the clothes up to dry overnight. Also consider packing synthetic-material clothing that wicks moisture.
2. Take a bath in nature
If there's a lake or stream near your campsite use it to take a bath assuming that entering the body of water is allowed. Just rinsing off in the water will feel refreshing and can help remove dirt from your skin. Note – you'll need to check that entering the water is allowed prior to losing cell service at the campsite. And don't use chemicals or other products when rinsing off in a natural source.
3. Bring water and biodegradable soap
If you don't want to bath in lakes or rivers, you can always use extra water and biodegradable soap. Just make sure to bathe at least 200 feet away from your campsite and any nearby water sources.
4. Use baby wipes or biowipes
If a dip in a stream or lake isn't an option and extra water isn't available, you can always use baby wipes or biowipes. Make sure you're packing those products out with you.
5. Use a microfiber towel
These towels are excellent for camping. They are compact and easy to pack, and can be used for quick drying.
6. Bring lots of hand sanitizer
Use it after bathroom breaks, and before and after cooking and eating.
7. Don't forget a toothbrush and toothpaste
Just remember to avoid brushing your teeth within 200 feet of a water source or your campsite.
8. Try dry shampoo
Dry shampoo is an excellent product for those who don't like greasy hair. It's especially great for longer camping trips. Just remember to leave the scented and "environmentally-unfriendly" products at home. That includes deodorant, perfume, hairspray, and any other similar products.
9. Poop properly
Know how to properly use the restroom at a campsite – whether that means digging a cathole or using a wag bag. A wag bag is preferred, as this means leaving no waste behind. Find more tips on pooping in a sustainable way on the Leave No Trace website .
