SOUTH CAROLINA (WJW) – A sheriff’s office in South Carolina has received several confused calls about a loud noise that sounds like a siren, whine or roar.

“The sound is cicadas,” the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page says.

The sheriff’s office took to Facebook on Tuesday to let their residents know the sounds they are hearing are simply the “sounds of nature.”

“Cicadas are a superfamily of insects that appear each spring. The nymphs have lived underground for 13-17 years and now this time they are hatching.  Although to some, the noise is annoying, they pose no danger to humans or pets. Unfortunately, it is the sounds of nature,” the post says .

South Carolina isn’t the only state experiencing a mass amount of cicadas this year. Ohio is also expecting an epic amount of cicadas this spring and summer, with multiple broods emerging from their current earthen homes to fill the air with their song.

The first emergence is expected in mid-May. Brood XIX emerges every 13 years.  As that group of cicadas calms dawn Brood XIII will also emerge . This group only emerges every 17 years.

According to the Associated Press , outside of hurting your ears with their singing or spattering you with their urine, cicadas are harmless to humans and pets.
