SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – An Upstate man lost over $10,000 to a dating app turned deputy scam.

According to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office, a man filed a report about a scam on Sunday afternoon.

The man told deputies he had been scammed out of $10,200 by someone pretending to be a Richland County Sheriff’s deputy.

He said he had met a woman named “Amber” on a dating app.

He said Amber began asking home for sexual favors and sending him explicit photographs.

He then told deputies that he received a voicemail on April 24 from someone claiming to be a deputy with the Richland County Sheriff’s Office requesting that he call them back.

The incident report said he got back in contact with the “deputy” who told him “Amber” had attempted suicide.

The “deputy” told him that “Amber” was a juvenile and that her parents were going to press charges unless he helped them pay for rehab for her.

The man sent the following payments:

    • $2,2000 on April 24 via Apple Pay
    • $2,000 on April 24 via Apple Pay
    • $4,000 on April 25 via Apple Pay

The victim was later contacted saying the girl had passed away and the family wanted to press charges unless he helped pay for her funeral.

That is when he sent $2,000 on April 26 via Walmart Pay.

He told deputies that when he never received a “waiver of criminal charges” he reached out to the Richland County Sheriff’s Office which confirmed it was a scam.
