BAY COUNTY, Fla. ( WMBB ) – The month of April is Autism Awareness Month.

El Weirdo is hosting students from the Margaret K. Lewis School to work on their art and raise money.

Last year, El Weirdo hung up pictures from students for autism awareness month.

This year for the entire month of April, El Weirdo is hosting ‘Art-tism’.

Margaret K. Lewis School receives a dollar for every non-alcoholic drink that is sold.

On Sunday, for Family Art Day students in the art class pulled out their paintbrushes and got to work.

“They can express themselves through art. Regardless if they’re angry or upset, they can use different colors to express themselves, whether they’re happy, sad. I mean, we’ve got some kids that are that are using a lot of bright colors, which I can tell they’re really in a good mood,” MKL Art teacher Gary McGowan said.

McGowan says each piece the kids paint they try to hide a small puzzle piece for autism representation.

All the proceeds from the month-long event go into funding for art supplies in the classroom. Any extra is used to offset the costs of field trips.

There are still two days left to help support the MKL school at El Weirdo.
