CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) — After a case of measles was confirmed in West Virginia Monday , the West Virginia Department of Health (WVDOH) is reporting that more than a hundred people from 30 counties may have been exposed.

According to a release from the WVDOH, 154 total people may have been exposed, 128 of which are West Virginia residents across 30 of its counties. Of those exposed, 62 “lack documentation of adequate protection against measles and are considered high risk,” the release said.

The Bureau for Public Health recommends that those exposed, especially those who lack immunity, should quarantine themselves until May 9 or May 10, depending on date of exposure.

Officials are working with the Monongalia County Health Department to maintain supplies for testing and vaccinations as well as conduct control activities.

“Measles is a serious disease that can cause severe symptoms especially in the most vulnerable kids and adults who are immunocompromised. The MMR vaccine is the best line of defense against measles. If you are unsure about your vaccination history, you can either get vaccinated or a blood test can be ordered through your local healthcare provider to determine your level of immunity,” State Health Officer Dr. Matthew Christiansen said.

You can find your local health department by visiting the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources website . To learn more about MMR vaccines, visit the CDC website .
