COPIAH COUNTY, Miss. ( WJTV ) – The State Fire Marshal’s Office ruled that the cause of a fatal explosion at a Copiah County home is undetermined.

“The Copiah Co. Explosion is ruled ‘undetermined’ and our investigation is complete. The definition of undetermined is that the exact cause cannot be determined because of the extent of damage,” officials with the State Fire Marshal’s Office said.

The Daily Leader reported Attorney Ben Wilson, with Morgan & Morgan, expected that ruling.

In January 2024, attorneys with Morgan & Morgan announced that a lawsuit was filed on behalf of the victims of the deadly propane explosion.

The explosion happened on January 14 at a home on Wilderness Road. According to attorneys, four people were killed in the explosion. The victims were identified as 14-year-old Toler Jordan, 18-year-old Houston Jordan, 43-year-old Calvin Jordan and 52-year-old Jeremy Mitchell

Morgan & Morgan is suing Herring Gas and two of the company’s employees, claiming the propane tank was improperly installed and inspected the night before the explosion.

WJTV 12 News reached out to Herring Gas about the lawsuit in January, and officials with the company said they have no statement at this time.
