A bit shy but a great observer, Marisol Galvan speaks her mind about healing and moving forward as a nursing student.

As a nursing student at University of Mount Olive, Marisol Galvan aims to always put the patient first. “People always underestimate me a little bit. I really enjoy doing what I do and helping people.”

“I am from Mexico but I grew up in Butner in North Carolina.” Galvan shares how finding her confidence has helped her pave the way for future students. “I want to be able to help other women like myself of Hispanic origin and be able to provide more for them and be an advocate for them.”

Galvan moved to Duplin County after her wedding in 2020 and noticed the growing need for healthcare at the Duplin Hospital. “It just made me realize how important healthcare is needed over here. The expectations for quality of care should be greater.”

She has been in the nursing program for a year and a half. Through her work and witnessing others, she stresses that you are taking on large responsibilities. “You are the patient’s advocate. Everything that you do is patient centered. It’s always what the patient wants.” She believes in quality over quantity and advocating for patients.

This month, she completed the mother baby rotation. “I didn’t know what specialty I wanted to go into until I came into this rotation. It’s been amazing!” She has enjoyed being able to share her bi-lingual communication skills with patients and support women at a special time in their lives.

“I saw my first birth ever and I cried. It was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. It kind of daunted on me – this is what I want to do and what I’m meant to do. Mother baby rotation was a big eye opener in a good way so now I know what I want to do moving forward.” She is reminded of what she really loves and believes that birth is a natural and beautiful thing.

She wasn’t sure when she first began her career what kind of nurse she wanted to become. She saw how tirelessly other nurses were working to help her father in the past. “Unfortunately my dad got really sick six years ago. I loved how every nurse that he received treated him so well and so kind. Overall, seeing those nurses take care of my dad and make sure that he had the best care for him every time he was in the hospital in and out. That really inspired me to become a nurse.”

Her advice is to remember your passion for healthcare is not to be forgotten. “I think it’s really scary going into nursing because they say it’s one of the hardest degrees out there but honestly if you put your mind and effort into it, you can do anything that you want to do. Seeking a program like University of Mount Olive that is really supportive is really where you’re going to strive to become a good nurse. Reaching the best possible education out there. Taking the time and effort, knowing that you love doing this is really what is going to get you through the nursing career.”
