BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – People who drive along one Berkeley County roadway are frustrated over empty promises for improvement.

“When you hit this area, you better be holding onto everything you have. Because it’s literally in a curve, and it’s literally gonna catapult your vehicle off the road.”

News 2 viewer Al Hallman shared a video he took driving on Calamus Point Road off Highway 176 in Lebanon. He said it’s the worst condition of any road he’s ever seen.

The potholes have caused many crashes and even a recent vehicle fire. And with plenty of children nearby, he’s worried someone could end up getting killed.

“I personally have pulled several cars out of ditches that have run off the road because of the road conditions. You literally have to ride in the middle of the road to not lose teeth from the car bouncing back and forth. It’s horrible, it’s in such bad condition, it’s unbelievable,” said Hallman.

Hallman said crews have come by to patch, but the band-aids only last three or four months – then leave a bigger hole.

So, Hallman and his neighbors are desperately calling for a complete resurfacing, even signing a petition to get the road paved five years ago.

“We’ve been told for the last several years that we’re on the plans to have the road resurfaced that year. And they tell us the same thing over and over and over again, and I don’t know where to turn. That’s why I contacted you,” he said.

News 2 reached out to the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) as records show this stretch of road is state-maintained; however, they referred us back to Berkeley County officials. We’ve asked them for a timeline on repaving.

We’re told they are working on that request. Count on News 2 for an update once we hear back.
