GEORGETOWN — A listing on the ob website Indeed is soliciting candidates for a director of Planning and Zoning in Sussex County, leading officials to confirm the current director, Jamie Whitehouse, is leaving for another job.

“I can confirm that Mr. Whitehouse is departing Sussex County for another professional opportunity, and the county is now working actively and aggressively to fill the position of director of planning & zoning as soon as possible,” said Chip Guy, Sussex County public information officer.

“With respect to Mr. Whitehouse’s departure, I can speak for the county council, county administration, and the planning & zoning commission in saying we are sorry to lose Jamie, both professionally and personally. But we all respect the choice he has made as he charts a new course in his career path.

“The county appreciates Mr. Whitehouse for his service to the people of Sussex County, for his professionalism and his expertise over the last several years, and we wish him all the best in his new endeavor.”

According to the release announcing his hire, Mr. Whitehouse moved to the United States from England in 2016, joining the county as a staff planner in 2017, before becoming planning and zoning director in 2020.

“Mr. Whitehouse has worked in both the public and private sectors on two continents, holding professional accreditations with both the American Institute of Certified Planners and the Royal Town Planning Institute,” his hiring release read.

“He holds an undergraduate law degree from Coventry University in Coventry, England, and a master’s degree in spatial planning from Birmingham City University in Birmingham, England.”

Sussex County called planning and zoning one of its highest-profile departments in the release.

At the time of his hire, Mr. Whitehouse’s priorities were stated to be drafting and implementing ordinances to enhance Sussex County’s land-use code and to support the recently adopted comprehensive plan, strengthening the office’s use of geographic information systems to provide more detailed information to the public on land use, and helping the public be better engaged in the planning application process.

Mr. Whitehouse was not present at Monday’s Board of Adjustment meeting, although the planning and zoning office provides support to the board.

Mr. Whitehouse declined to comment Wednesday.
