Sheriff’s deputies are encouraging local residents to lock their doors and secure valuables when parking at recreational trailheads as the warmer summer months approach.

In a news release issued Tuesday, the Bannock County Sheriff’s Office said it has been receiving increasing reports of both vehicles that have been burglarized as well as cars that have been outright stolen when parked at trailheads. Deputies say cars have been stolen after keys have been either left inside the vehicle or hidden somewhere around the vehicle.

“We live in a great area for outdoor recreation, but even in our small community, it’s important to be diligent about locking your doors,” said Sgt. Justin Cannon of the sheriff’s office. “Thieves know where to check for hidden keys, so we recommend locking your vehicle and bringing the keys with you.”

Cannon also recommends that local residents secure valuables and other items contained inside vehicles, including guns, purses, electronics, or garage door openers.

“If someone sees it and wants it, they’ll find a way to get it,” Cannon said. “This goes for all trailheads, all the time. It’s not just a Bannock County problem. This kind of thing happens everywhere, so it’s important to stay diligent and make a habit of locking up your stuff.”

The sheriff’s office is investigating the reported burglaries. Anyone with information about a vehicle burglary should call the Bannock County Sheriff’s Office at 208-236-7111.
