Flag Pond to host Upper E-T Fiddlers Convention

The 6th annual Upper East Tennessee Fiddlers Convention brings music competitions, clogging, square dancing, food and more to the old Flag Pond School in Unicoi County this Friday and Saturday, April 26 and 27.

The Fiddlers Convention is a family-friendly event that begins on Friday evening with a square dance and performances by the Tennessee Bluegrass Band and the Green Grass Cloggers. Saturday is a day of competitions, music making and special workshops. Old-time and traditional musicians offering workshops include Carol Elizabeth Jones, Dan Gellert, Kirk Sutphin and Clarke Williams. Entry for the weekend is $10 and camping is also $10. There will be food trucks and vendors.

Flag Pond is located just off of Interstate 26 in Unicoi County at exit 50. The Upper East Tennessee Fiddlers Convention is sponsored by the Friends of Rocky Fork State Park and East Tennessee State University’s Department of Appalachian Studies with generous support from John and Bonnie Martin.

ETSU’s Center of Excellence, founded in 1984, includes the Regional Resources Institute, the Archives of Appalachia, the Reece Museum, and the Institute for Appalachian Music and Culture. The Center also publishes an online magazine, Appalachian Places. The Center is part of the Department of Appalachian Studies, which includes the renowned Bluegrass, Old-Time, and Roots Music Studies program, graduate programs in Appalachian Studies and in Heritage Interpretation and Museum Studies, Scottish and Irish Studies, study abroad experiences, and several undergraduate minors, including Audio Production and Brewing and Distillation Studies. Scholarships and online courses are available.
