On Saturday, Jack Reed Park hosted a vital community event as the Pearl River County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PRC SPCA) organized “Wellness in the Park,” offering essential health services for pets at reduced costs.

Under sunny spring skies, dogs and cats received wellness check-ups, rabies shots, bordetella shots, and heartworm tests, providing pet owners with crucial veterinary care. The director of the PRC SPCA, Elizabeth Treadaway, highlighted the significance of the event, noting its longstanding presence in the community.

“We’ve been putting on this program for nearly 15 years,” said Treadaway. “We hold it twice a year, in April and November, offering low-cost vaccines to anyone, not just PRC residents.” She further explained the recent expansion of services, including microchipping and heartworm testing, all funded by the shelter through grants and fundraising efforts.

The event aims to bridge the gap for pet owners who may struggle to afford veterinary care, offering a lifeline to those in need. Its impact on the community is significant, providing a platform for pet owners to ensure the health and well-being of their beloved pets. Originally held at the shelter, the event has since outgrown its former location, prompting the city to donate generously to Jack Reed Park for the occasion.

“We usually have over 500 individuals getting shots,” Treadaway added, underlining the significant turnout and community support for the event. The community’s active participation and support are crucial to the success of this event. Dr. Anne Borgen was on-site, administering rabies shots and ensuring the well-being of the attending pets.
