The high school track and field season is here and in full swing, as the two-month mark passes us. The state is coming off a historic year in which seven Arizona Interscholastic Association records were broken. We've already had two taken down this spring.  During the 2024 season, The Arizona Republic is tracking the top performances each week as Arizona’s best athletes compete on the oval and in the field.

Here are the top boy’s performances from the ninth week of the season.

1 . Diego Aguirre-Stewart, Goodyear Millennium, sprints, Sr.: The second-year athlete continues to put together a strong spring as he ran 10.39 seconds to win the 100 meters over Goodyear Desert Edge junior Jamar Beal-Goines at the Agua Fria District Championships held at Waddell Canyon View High School to set a new state lead. The time was wind-aided at 2.7 meters per second so it doesn’t count for record purposes. But it’s still an all-time performance from an Arizona sprinter and is one of the best all-conditions times in state history. The state record is 10.33. Aguirre-Stewart is already the state leader in the 200 meters at 21.21.

2. Lucas Schiermeyer, Phoenix Desert Vista, throws, Jr.: Threw a personal best of 185-9 feet in the javelin at the Southwest Javelin Showcase held at Chandler Seton Catholic Preparatory, moving up to No. 2 in the state for the event this season. While his star teammate and Nebraska commit Hayden Gorovitz — who broke the state record in the javelin last year — recovers from elbow surgery, Schiermeyer has taken on a bigger role and is shining in that role.

3. Vance Nilsson, Gilbert, sprints, Sr.: Showed off his range over the weekend by putting on a show in the 200 and 400 meters at the True Grit Invite held at Queen Creek High School. Nilsson, who just broke the state record in the 300-meter hurdles 10 days ago , ran a wind-legal 21.43 seconds in the 200 and 47.38 in the 400 to win both events. In the 200, Nilsson moves up to No. 5 in the state. For the 400, Nilsson is now No. 2 in the state and is only the second Arizona athlete to run under 48 seconds in the event this season.

4. Kevin Seales, Avondale Westpoint, sprints, Sr.: Won the 100 meters at the Tolleson District Championships held at his home track, running a wind-legal time of 10.68. That is the second-fastest wind-legal time in the state this season behind Beal-Goines. Overall, it is ranked No. 7 in Arizona for all-conditions. Seales also won the 200 in 21.75.

5. Addarius Miles, Avondale Westview, jumps, Jr.: Continued his winning streak in the high jump, going 6-0 to take home the Tolleson District Championship title. Miles, who is tied for the state lead in the event at 6-8, hasn’t lost in the high jump since March 3.

Other highlights

  • Mesa Desert Ridge senior Blake Alexander ran 48.19 at the True Grit Invite, the No. 3 time in the state.
  • Queen Creek sophomore Dash Wasson went 16 feet in the pole vault for the second consecutive week, winning the True Grit Invite at 16-0.
  • Thatcher junior Wyatt Nicholas jumped 46-8.5 in the triple jump at the Safford Rotary Track Invitational to move up to No. 5 in the state for the event.
