My name is Charles Briscoe, and I am a candidate for the Republican nomination for Fayette County Assessor. I currently have the honor of serving as the 36th Mayor for the City of Oak Hill.
Although I enjoy serving as Mayor, I believe that I can make a difference for even more people as your Assessor. I am running for Assessor because our people need help. I have talked to the single mother that is working multiple jobs to make ends meet for herself and her children. I have talked to the seniors that have to choose between their food, medicine, and utility bills because they don’t have enough money to pay for it all. And I have talked to the moms and dads that sit up at night worrying about how they are going to pay their bills. These are the struggles that I have heard about firsthand that made it an easy choice to run for Fayette County Assessor.
It is imperative that the Assessor initiate a conversation with the County Commission about lowering taxes. This should be a joint venture between the Assessor and County Commission, even when elected officials change. According to my research, my opponent has never asked the County Commission to consider lowering taxes. As a Fayette County taxpayer, I find this to be unacceptable. It is nice for our Assessor to win awards from the state, but how does that help our people? The Assessor should be committed to working with other elected officials, like the County Commission and the state Legislature, to lower taxes, increase the homestead exemption for our seniors, and offer incentives to attract and retain businesses to offer good-paying jobs.
My opponent says that I don’t have the experience to do the job. However, during my time in the Assessor’s Office, I was able to correct lots of mistakes for property owners around the county. For example, my own property at the time was listed with the wrong owner. Some pieces of land were marked as vacant but they clearly had someone residing there. These were mistakes made under my opponent’s watch, but were corrected by me. Had they not been corrected, the property owners potentially could have been subjected to unnecessary issues. Additionally, I completed large jobs by myself many times while in the Assessor’s office. It doesn’t seem like you would send someone out by themself if that person didn’t have the ability to complete the task.
As a conservative-minded person, I believe in term limits for all elected positions. My opponent has far exceeded any reasonable term limits that may be imposed on the position of Assessor. As we see happening in Washington, people keep seats warm for a long time but end up not doing anything to help their constituents and they begin to feel entitled to the position. Again, that is unacceptable. In 2016, my opponent said he would retire after that term, if he was re-elected. It did not happen. In 2020, my opponent again made the same claims and it did not happen.
Now, we are in 2024 and he is again saying the same thing. We have heard this song and dance before. These are the same claims you hear from people in Washington, but they never actually follow through with it, but it’s not too unexpected when you consider that my opponent was elected and served as a Democrat up until a few months ago and supported the Democratic ticket.
Again, my name is Charles Briscoe, and I am asking for your support in the upcoming election on May 14. If you believe in term limits and lowering taxes, please vote Briscoe for Assessor. I respect my opponent, but it is time for us to say enough is enough and allow someone new to get some real results for people.
