BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — As spring continues to warm up, more people will be out and about, including children.

59News spoke with Deputy Matthew Dunlap of the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Department on what children should do if they are approached by a stranger. Deputy Dunlap said there are several ways to handle the situation.

“Don’t be afraid to go to the police, if something feels off, then it’s probably off. Don’t be afraid to yell, scream, whatever you need to do by any means necessary. Like let a parent or an adult close by know, and don’t be afraid to call the police, like that’s what we’re here for,” said Dunlap.

On the playground, at a mall, or even walking through town, if you see something, say something is a good policy to keep. Parents are also encouraged to keep an eye on their children and their surroundings and report any suspicious behavior to authorities.

Stranger danger is a real risk and not one that should be taken lightly.
