People who live in the Southport area who have missed their morning coffee and doughnuts for the past several weeks can breathe a sigh of relief.
A large crowd gathered Friday morning at the Dunkin' location at 1141 Broadway for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the reopening of the popular shop after a three-week closure for remodeling.
Several representatives from the Chemung County Sheriff's Office were among those on hand for the ceremony. They were there to accept a donation for Investigator Michael Theetge, who is recovering after being seriously injured while chasing a retail theft suspect March 29 near the Target department store in Big Flats.
Seeing the Dunkin' Southport location reopen is great news, said Jennifer Herrick-McGonigal, president of the Chemung County Chamber of Commerce.
"This is one of the busiest areas in Southport and the county. Business growth in the community is important," said Herrick-McGonigal, who added she was flooded with calls when the Dunkin' shop closed. "I live up here. Usually the line is around the building."
The Southport Dunkin' facility was built about 10 years ago and was due for an upgrade, said Director of Operations Lindsay Doyle, who said the remodel was designed to make the operation more efficient.
During the ceremony, Dunkin' owners and employees presented the sheriff's office representatives with a check for $1,000 — part of $9,000 raised locally for Theetge by Dunkin' locations through their Bapa Network Foundation.

"This is a family here in Southport. We're all local, all from Chemung County," Doyle said. "Anything that helps, it's important to do. We have the ability to give back."
The store is open from 4:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day of the week.
